Verrado Baseball Wins Wolves Classic Tourney

Verrado Baseball Wins Wolves Classic Tourney

The Verrado Baseball team won its third straight Wolves Classic Championship with a 4-3 victory over the Buckeye Hawks on Saturday, April 5.
The Vipers reached the championship bracket by sweeping their opponents in pool play.  In pool play, Verrado defeated Winslow, Chino Valley and Poston Butte during Thursday and Friday’s games.  On Saturday the Vipers squared off against the Payson Longhorns in the first semi-final game.  Verrado won behind the pitching of Senior Luke Gunther and defeated Payson 4-1. Gunther held the Longhorns to just 5 hits in the game.
The second semi-final game saw the Buckeye Hawks play the Snowflake Lobos.
The Hawks took a 2-run lead during the top of the third inning but saw that lead evaporate when Snowflake countered with three runs in the bottom of the third. Snowflake added one more run in the fifth inning and led 4-2 in the top of seventh, needing just three outs for the win.
However, Buckeye came to life in the seventh inning and struck to score four runs in the inning and taking a 6-4 lead.  The Hawks held Snowflake scoreless in the bottom half to win and earn a spot in the championship game against Verrado.
Buckeye struck first against Verrado, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Hawks held Verrado scoreless through three innings, but Verrado managed to score two runs when Justin Thraen hit a two run inside the park homerun.  Buckeye’s Quinten Hunt made a valiant effort to catch Thraen’s drive but just missed the ball allowing Elijah Celeya and Thraen to score. Verrado added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead, and Buckeye got one run back in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 4-3. And that is how it ended.
Verrado’s starting pitcher Blake Perkins got the win and Senior Erik Kleine came on in relief to get the save.
