USL PRO President Tim Holt Visits Arizona United SC on Western Road Trip

"Close!"

That was the initial one-word response to a question posed to United Soccer League's President Tim Holt when asked how close the Phoenix area came to losing its USL PRO soccer franchise after just one year in the Valley.

Holt took time to speak to the media while visiting Peoria Sports Complex prior to Arizona United SC's game against LA Galaxy II on Friday, April 25.

"It certainly was a possibility that we had to consider," Holt said. "We made the decision that we weren't going to continue forward the way things were going [under former Phoenix FC management]."

The league had grown weary of the floundering Phoenix FC franchise that left a wake of questions in its path following an inaugural season that spiraled downward and experienced losses in attendance, players, vendors and venues as the season progressed.

Despite a reorganization and stadium announcement that gave supporters a glimmer of hope for the 2014 season, Phoenix FC still struggled under essentially the same leadership.

"We were in a very precarious part of the cycle. Schedules were released and teams were planning," Holt said.

In late February, USL PRO leaders came to Phoenix in one last attempt to find an ownership team to manage a soccer franchise in the market before pulling the plug.

Kyle Eng
In stepped Peoria businessman Kyle Eng.  As chance would have it, Eng was departing Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as USL PRO officials were arriving. Both parties met at a restaurant in Terminal 4. The foundation of a relationship was formed and Arizona United Soccer Club was born.

Holt and others in the USL PRO community couldn't be happier.

"What [Kyle] and his group have done in five or six weeks is the type of stuff that takes five or six months to do," Holt said. "So, we're sure this is going to be a very productive, positive year. He's laying the foundation for the future.

"And we're really, really excited to see what he can do with a whole off-season of preparation both on and off the field. This is going to be one of the stronger franchises in our league for years to come."

Any concerns of other franchises about the viability of Arizona United SC were quickly put to rest.

"They're thrilled with what's happened here," Holt said.  "People can already see that there has been a noticeable change. Some things that have changed are very obvious, like the brand; but, also just in the manner of operation, the manner of the sophistication of the staff and the type of professionals they're dealing with."

Communication has also been an important aspect of Arizona United's management approach. Holt has observed the team's communication with stakeholders and considers it very inclusive of fans, media and other teams in the league.

Holt added, "We're very fortunate that Kyle's acquired this team when he's acquired it and we're grateful that he's taken the responsibility of leading it forward."

While the rapid ramp-up of Arizona United is proving successful, Holt does not particularly view it as a business model for future USL PRO franchises.

"Different groups bring different skill sets to the table," Holt said, citing the example of next season's Tulsa expansion team - the Roughnecks.  "Their experience and skill set is operating professional sports teams very successfully. They've won all the awards in minor league baseball for doing that. But there's no soccer management expertise.

"We've relied too much on asking [potential owners] 'What's your soccer background?' rather than 'What's your ability to operate a successful professional sports team?'"

The one constant the Holt says has remained from year-to-year for the valley's USL PRO franchise is the supporter organization - La Furia Roja.

"One of the assets here was LFR and the passion they had. They've remained loyal and consistent all the way through," said Holt.

Holt added that LFR and other support groups around the league are important for growing the fan base.

"I think soccer has learned well that you can take the most passionate fans who like to scream and yell," Holt said. "They can have a great time and in the same venue they create the soundtrack for people that like to sit back and watch a soccer game a little bit more passively.

"So, I think everybody's learning from everybody, but the ingredients here, especially on the fans side."

Holt also spent time addressing expansion in USL PRO, which just a few years ago had only one team - LA Blues - in the west.  Now, the league has teams in California, Arizona and Oklahoma and more teams on the way. In addition to Tulsa, another team west of the Mississippi River will be announced in early May with another announcement possible later in the season.

These new team announcements along with MLS alignments will change the structure of the league.

"I can almost guarantee next year we'll have a conference based system," Holt said. "We've already talked about it at the board of governors level.  The question really, based on growth and expansion in the league, is if it is a two conference system - West and East? Or, is it three - West, Central and East?

The latter conference model is the model Holt feels is best for owners, fans, players and for lower division professional soccer in this country in general.

Regionalization, Holt feels, is key to growing sport. The proximity of OKC Energy and Tulsa during the 2015 season will create a Turnpike Derby and create greater interest in soccer in the area.

When asked if FC Tucson is in a market on the USL PRO radar Holt's response was "Absolutely they are."

"We'd think they'd be a great USL PRO rival for Arizona United," Holt added "We have a ton of respect for the folks that are behind that team - Greg Foster and Chris Keeney. They are guys who 'get it' in terms of what it takes to run [a team]. They have aspirations of moving to the professional level. It's a matter of is the timing right?"

"Talk about a wild Arizona derby rivalry situation if we could make that happen. I think it'd be good - the more of those situations we could create around the country."

Arizona United Earns a Draw Against LA Galaxy II

Arizona United SC gained a point in the USL PRO standings by rallying to earn a draw against LA Galaxy II in a game played in front of 2,818 at Peoria Sports Complex Friday evening.

Galaxy II came into the game ranked second in the USL PRO standings with a 3-1-1 record, while Arizona United was 1-1-0 after its first two games against OKC Energy and Sacramento Republic respectively.
LA (3-1-2) tallied the game's first goal during the 35th minute when Galaxy II defender Oscar Sorto picked United's Daniel Antunez's pocket near midfield and had an open field run until he sent a crossing pass to sprinting midfielder Raul Mendiola.  Mendiola used his second touch to fire a shot on goal. Arizona United's goalkeeper Evan Newton came out to cut down the angle and deflect Mendiola's shot which still hit the net just inside the far post.

United (1-1-1) started slow for the second straight game, conceding possession to Galaxy II during the first 20 minutes of the game.

Following the game United Head Coach Mike Dellorusso discussed the focus and leadership he expects from the opening kickoff.

"The first half is the players half and they need to get a little bit more ownership; demand a little bit more out of each other," Dellorusso said. "It's all a learning process," he added. "We weren't forcing the game at all. The harder we made it on them then the game opened up and we were able to keep the ball a little better.

"I needed somebody to show some sort of leadership out there and we had a lot of guys step up in the second half and do that."

Arizona United Head Coach Michael Dellorusso
That leadership paid off in the second half as Arizona was able to tally the equalizer during a sequence in which Joseph Toby and Jon Okafor teamed up to quickly move the ball down the left side. A pass from Okafor to Brandon Swartzendruber drew LA defenders to the top of the 18-yard box and Swartzendruber was able to find Paolo DelPiccolo in space. DelPiccolo initially overran the ball but was able to turnback and wrap his foot around the ball to and beat LA goalkeeper Cody Laurendi with a shot to the far post.

Arizona United Midfielder Paolo DelPiccolo (6) wraps his foot around the ball before LA Galaxy II's Aleksander Djokovic can block a shot attempt. DelPicollo's shot found the back of net to tie the game a one goal apiece.
"It's big. It's big to equalize." DelPiccolo said after the game. "We came out slow.

"To get a goal and even things up and then push for the win, it was big."

DelPiccolo went on the say the biggest change in the second half was attitude. "We were just a little tense in the first half; not energized enough. When you're more focused more things work in your favor."

Focus is what Dellorusso is counting on.

"Now we just have to take that to our next game and hopefully they can start with that attitude Saturday," Dellorusso said.

Arizona United's next game is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, against the Charlotte Eagles at the Peoria Sports Complex. Game time is 7:00 p.m.

Arizona United SC Notches First Win in Franchise History

The Arizona United Soccer Club defeated  Sacramento Republic FC by a score of 2-1 in a game played at Peoria Sports Complex Saturday night.

Arizona United Goalkeeper Eric Newton faced 11 shots, made four saves and allowed a goal by the Republic's Rodrigo Lopez, assisted by Thomas Stewart. The goal came in the 27th minute.

Arizona United (1-1-0) gained their first points of he season with goals by Brandon Swartzendruber in the 37th minute and Jonathan Top in the 85th minute.

Arizona's team struggled to keep possession during the first 15 minutes of the game but gained more confidence and gained great control as they got deeper into the first half.

United Head Coach Mike DelloRusso said he has seen some improvement in holding possession which was a concern following the team's 4-0 loss to OKC Energy FC last week.

"Much better, not perfect, but much better," DelloRusso said of Arizona United's possession after the game. "[The players] moved the ball well, the spacing was better and our understanding of each other was better. I thought we took a little bit more what the game gave us and I was pleased."
Brandon Swartzendruber scored Arizona United's first-ever goal

Swartzendruber's goal came after he received a cross from his right by Matt Kassel and went unchallenged while he teed up a shot against Rebublic FC goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek.  Swartzendruber tucked the ball in toward the near post after feigning a shot to the far post.

"It was good for us to get that first goal," Swartzendruber said. "I had all kinds of time and I'm just glad was was able to put it away for us."

Arizona United had an opportunity to take a lead into the locker room at halftime when Forward Jon Okafor was fouled in the penalty area by Sacramento's Micky Daly.  Daly was ejected following the foul and United was awarded a penalty kick attempt.  United's Matt Kassel stepped up for the attempt; however, Jakubek anticipated the attempt to his left and made the save.

Sacramento Republic had to play with 10 men from that point on.

Arizona United's second goal came late in the game with help of Kadeem Dacres who made his United debut when he entered the game during the 67th minute as a substitute for Jon Okafor.  Dacres headed a cross from Matt Kassel down towards the feet of Jonathan Top who swept the ball past Jakubek's left side.

For Top it was a split second opportunity which was a result of being at the right place at the right time.

"We were able to get the ball out wide to Kassel," said Top after the game. "Kassel put in a good ball to the back post and I believe it was [Joseph] Toby got up for the header. I turned around and was in the right place at the right time and reacted to the ball and luckily it went in."

Jonathan Top (second from left) sweeps the ball toward goal
Note: Toby was officially credited with the assist; however, photo and video records show the header assist came from Dacres.

Next up for Arizona United SC is the LA Galaxy II, the reserve team for Major League Soccer's LA Galaxy.  Galaxy II is currently sitting a the top of USL PRO standings with 10 points and a record of 3-1-1.

The game is scheduled for Friday, April 25th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Peoria Sports Complex.

Arizona United SC Drops Inaugural Game at Home

When is a loss not a loss?  If you’re a valley soccer fan that question was answered Saturday night after USL PRO Soccer’s Arizona United Soccer Club fell in its inaugural game against Oklahoma City’s Energy FC by a score of 4-0 at Peoria Sports Complex.

An announced attendance of 2,888 spectators enjoyed a game few could imagine happening just a month ago.

The constant silence of the Phoenix FC Wolves organization and the sudden announcement that the team will no longer be operating a USL PRO franchise burst a bubble that seemed destined to pop as the organization floundered despite having open tryouts for prospective players just weeks before.

But, as soon as all seemed for naught, there was new life infused into soccer supporters as word of Phoenix FC’s demise was quickly followed by news of the formation of Arizona United, fronted by Peoria businessman Kyle Eng.

Eng spent more than 20 minutes with the media prior to Saturday’s game and walked through the chronology of the team’s formation from first contact with USL PRO on Feb. 21, through the announcement that soccer would indeed continue in Arizona on March 13.

During the first meeting with USL PRO it became apparent that Eng and his team would be right fit for ownership of a franchise.

“We want to be Arizona’s soccer team,” Eng said. “We are Arizona’s only professional team in Arizona. We want to be united in that.” Hence the name Arizona United SC.

The next order for Eng and his staff was to hire a coach.  He told his staff to “find a guy who has a winning tradition, who knows how to win on the field and who brings something different.”

They found that coach in Maryland assistant coach and USL PRO veteran Mike DelloRusso.

Earning fans back is important to Eng, who has adopted three mottos: Put a quality product on the field; create a great fan experience; put together a team that people can be proud to cheer for.

“If we can do those three things then we’ve accomplished our goal,” said Eng, “We’ll earn our fans back”

Eng acknowleged it has taken a lot of hard work to pull off game one in such a short period of time and some tasks as formal game uniforms and signage were not quite ready. Other areas such as concessions and merchandise booths will be assessed.

As for the game on the field, Arizona United held on during the first half to take a tie going into the locker room, but Arizona United faced a steep challenge in the second half due to the dismissal of London Woodberry who received two yellow cards in the first half.

It did not take long for OKC to take advantage of the United's one-man deficit.  Just a minute into the second half, OKC's Steven Perry tucked a shot into the right side of the net to give the Energy a 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, Kyle Greig was able to head in a cross to double the score.

Throughout the game, Arizona United struggled to maintain possession; a testament, perhaps, to the scant practice time as a team.  Many players on the United side had one week or less to practice with the entire squad.  OKC added two more goals by Kyle Miller (65') and Adda Djeziri (70') to put the game out of reach.

Arizona United did manage to threaten OKC keeper John Kempin on a few occasions during the game.
Following the game, Arizona United Midfielder Matt Kassel was not making any excuses.  "I don't want to make any excuses," Kassel said. "Everybody's played the game before. They (OKC) have played a few games already. You could tell that," suggesting the match fitness level of OKC gave the Energy the advantage.

"The red card was unfortunate," Kassell added "It's something all of us will learn from. We've got to take it and move forward."
Kassel went on to say he was impressed by the level of support for the team in its first game. He acknowleged the soccer community in the valley and the support demonstrated by the fans and supporters at the game.

Next up, Arizona United will face Sacramento at Peoria Sports Complex on Saturday, April 19. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Arizona’s Pro Soccer Franchise Starts Anew

Arizona’s Pro Soccer Franchise Starts Anew

It has been a whirlwind few months for professional soccer in Arizona.
With less than two months left before the start of the 2014 season, Arizona’s soccer team—Phoenix FC Wolves—lost its franchise rights for its USL PRO team.
The same day it was announced that Arizona United Soccer Club, under the leadership of Peoria businessman Kyle Eng, would the fill void left by Phoenix FC Wolves’ departure.
As Arizona United ramped up for its upcoming season, many questions were left unanswered about Phoenix FC’s departure.
Eng, worked diligently with Director of Soccer Operations Kevin Stevenson to find a head coach who could search out, sign and lead players needed for the upcoming season.
Michael Dellorusso, an assistant coach at the University of Maryland, was announced as Arizona United’s head coaching choice on March 28.
“Michael Dellorusso represents the bright future of soccer in Arizona,” said Eng, “He will bring a winning tradition to the Valley and we look forward to his close interaction with our fans and putting a great product on the field.”
With one week to go before the team’s first game, no players had yet been signed. However, during the past few days a flurry of announcements have revealed the names of 16 players who have come to terms with the team.
Two Coloradans were the first announced as signees with the team—Brad Stisser of Highlands Ranch and Brandon Swartzendruber of Grand Junction, both forwards.
To date, Scott Morrison is the only Phoenix FC

Scott Morrison, from Scotland, is the only former Phoenix FC Wolves player who has signed with Arizona SC to this point. Morrison is a fan favorite and offensive threat. He scored three goals from set pieces during the 2013 season.
Stisser, Swartzendruber and Morrison will be joined by thirteen other players, mostly Americans. There are still a few vacancies on the team to fill as of press time.
Other casualties of the turmoil that struck the franchise from transition form Phoenix FC to Arizona United SC were pre-season games and the opening regular season game against Colorado’s Major League Soccer Reserve team.
The first game for Arizona United SC comes this Saturday when the team will host the OKC Energy from Oklahoma City.  OKC is coming off a 2-0 win against the Orange County Blues last weekend.
Arizona United will play its home games in the main stadium at the Peoria Sports Complex.
Game time Saturday is at 7:00 p.m.

Verrado Competes at Covina Invite

Verrado's Emily Pompa clears her five foot attempt in the high jump.
Verrado Competes At Covina Invite

Verrado High School’s track and field team traveled to California’s San Gabriel Valley last weekend to participate in the Covina Invitational track and field event. This was the event’s 23rd year.

The Covina Invitational was the creation of current Verrado and former Agua Fria Head Track Coach Ted Campbell, who previously taught and coached at host Covina High School. Campbell’s Covina legacy has grown into an event attended by more than 30 schools this year.  In addition to Verrado, other teams also traveled from Nevada and Washington state.

Verrado took 51 athletes to the event which held track and field events for Varsity and Freshman/Sophomore levels.

Some of the Vipers’ best performances in the field events.  Senior boys high jumper Chris Jones finished first overall with a jump of 6’ 4”, which is equal to his personal record. He finished with a jump 2 inches high than his closest competition.

Madison Goss finished fourth overall in the girls high jump, clearing a height of 5’ 2”.

Other field competitors included David Bassett, who threw the discuss more than 133 feet and put the shot more than 43 feet.  Morgan Irish was the girls top performer in the throwing events. She launched the discus more than 83 feet, while registering a distance of more than 31 feet in the shot put.

In the Frosh division Jacob Wahlstrom was the top Verrado high jumper with a height of 5’ 4”.

On the track, Verrado fielded athletes in sprinting and distance events.  Top finishers on the track included Ross Dietz who finished eight in the 100 meter dash, Paden Goucher who was sixth in the 1600 meter run and Xavier James who finished 8th in the 300 meter hurdles.  The boys 4x400 team of Nathan Roehl, Dillon Ratliff, James and Goucher finished fifth overall.

For the girls, Justice Spivey and Megan Dentler finished sixth and tenth respectively in the 300 meter hurdles.  Spivey also finished tenth in the 100 meter hurdles. The 4x100 hurdle team of Goss, Kelly Smith, Melissa Cramer and Uche Uchendu finished seventh overall.

In addition to the track and field event, the Viper athletes also got to have some fun when they traveled to Magic Mountain theme park on Friday afternoon.  The team stayed into the evening.

The weekend also included a little unplanned excitement as two earthquakes and a series of small aftershocks shook the greater Los Angeles area.  Verrado Principal Thomas Huffman tweeted the team was safe after the first earthquake hit on Friday evening. The team was on a bus en route to their hotel.  A second quake hit Saturday afternoon during the track meet. It went largely unnoticed but the tremor did cause a moment of instability for those on their feet.

The Viper track team has several more events scheduled this year including the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State University,  the Agua Fria District Championships on Apr. 24 and the Viper Last Chance Qualifier on Apr. 30.  The Arizona Div. II track meet begins on Wedneday, May 7.
